John & Sarah Dawson moved back to Brooklyn (by 1875 census) after marrying in 1864 in Missouri to settle. John became a partner at the J. W. Mason Furniture company of New York. According to family notes, in addition to the 4 story brownstone in Brooklyn (where John's sister Susan also lived with her children and nephew), they had a house in Hunter, NY (location of a J. W. Mason factory) and a cottage in Sheepshead Bay. John was a volunteer fireman in NY and a member of the Veteran Firemen and Volunteer Firemen's Associations as well as the City Club, the Eckford Social Club of Brooklyn (a baseball club) and the Howard Lodge #60, IOOF of Brooklyn and the Stony Clove Railroad of Greene County.
